This dinner plate of a fish is the new Colorado state record bluegill.

There’s a new angling peak to summit if you’re hoping to catch the biggest bluegill in the state of Colorado.

According to a Facebook post by the Colorado Parks and Wildlife – Durango page, the record has been broken by Gregory Wallace, a fly angler who wasn’t even targeting bluegill.

In fact, Wallace was aiming towards catching a pike on a fly rod, and instead hooked up with the biggest recorded bluegill ever caught in the state.

The big bluegill measured 12 3/4 inches long and weighed 2 pounds, 9 1/2 ounces.

It was caught the week of June 12, 2019 at Totten Reservoir in the Southwest portion of the state.

Congratulations Gregory Wallace for catching the new Colorado state record Bluegill out of Totten Reservoir! The fish…

The previous record bluegill from Colorado was a 2-pound, 5-ounce fish caught at the Comanche Power Plant in 2014. This new record surpasses it by four and a half ounces.

You can see all the Colorado fishing records by weight here, and by length (catch-and-release) here.

If you’re curious, the all-tackle world record for bluegill is 4 pounds, 10 ounces, and it was caught all the way back in 1947.
