https://www.fieldandstream.com/water-bottles-that-will-help-you-stay-hydrated-in-backcountry/
How much water you carry into the backcountry is just as important as what you carry it in. Whether you decide to filter and drink mostly from water sources along the trail, or pack in everything you need, some sort of hydration container is vital, if only for emergency cooking or drinking. Here are a few options to consider.
Stainless Steel Bottles
Environmentally friendly stainless steel gets the nod for durability and clean drinking, but not all stainless steel is the same. Some types may contain traces of lead. Look for a bottle made from food-grade 18/8 stainless steel to make sure you are doing the best by your own health as well as the environment.
Plastic Bottles
The industrial chemical bisphenol A has been used in the manufacture of plastics for decades, including drinking bottles. Concerns over the hormone-mimicking properties of BPA have led to the advent of many BPA-free products, especially in the container industry. Polycarbonate plastic bottles are a great lightweight option, but be sure to look for the “BPA Free” designation.
Insulated
If you need your hydration container to pull double duty in both hot and cold weather, check out an insulated water bottle. It’s not quite the same thermal quality of a bona fide thermos, but they are the most versatile type of water bottle you can own.

https://www.fieldandstream.com/things-to-look-for-in-inflatable-watercraft/
While it’s true that inflatable paddlecraft do not offer the same performance as a vessel manufactured from fiberglass, Kevlar, or rotomolded plastic, they are hard to beat for portability and instant access to water you might not otherwise be able to reach—especially if you’re an angler wanting to ply areas inaccessible to other watercraft. Here’s how to pick the right inflatable for your next expedition.
Single or Tandem
Tandem kayaks take up little more room than a single-seater. Deflated, they can be car-topped, horse-packed, flown-in, or shipped to your final destination. It’s a great way to share the paddling chores and double your carrying capacity without doubling the weight. If you want a boat specifically for fishing, some models include GPS mounts, fishfinders, and rod holders integrated into the hull.
Intended Use
If you just want to cross a body of water, say an alpine lake or a few miles of stream, a single-person inflatable kayak may be the way to go. They are small enough to carry deflated on your back but offer enough navigability to open up miles of inaccessible water or hunting ground.
The SUP Option
Once considered a fad, stand up-paddleboards (SUP) are here to stay, and anglers have taken note. Throw an inflatable SUP in the stowage of your center-console boat, pump it up at your point of anchorage, then hop on and use it to cross otherwise unnavigable marsh and access isolated flats.

https://www.fieldandstream.com/things-you-need-to-know-before-buying-adult-dog-food/
Some dogs will happily eat any dog food that you put in front of them (along with any food that you don’t put in front of them, but is within reach). Other dogs will literally turn up their noses at pricey dog food that you suspect has a higher nutritional value, ounce for ounce, than that fast-food burger you ate for lunch. So how do you make sure the food you’re feeding your dog provides the proper nourishment but isn’t overly expensive?
Fortunately, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration does ensure that the ingredients used in pet food are safe and appropriate for consumption by the animal, and that the food is produced under sanitary conditions and truthfully labeled. But we all want our dogs to eat the best possible food and like to eat the food that you give to them—without it costing you an unreasonable amount of money—so keep these three things in mind as you shop:
1. Know the difference between chicken meal and chicken byproduct.
Chicken meal is made from chicken flesh and skin that has been ground up, cooked, and dried. It is a source of protein in some dog foods. Chicken byproduct is manufactured similarly and is also a protein source for some dog foods, but is made from the remainder of a chicken from which the parts intended for human consumption have been removed. It’s composed of heads, feet, bones, organs including spleens and intestines, and undeveloped eggs. The ratio of each chicken part in byproduct can vary from batch to batch.
2. Feeding guidelines can differ from brand to brand.
That means you may not need to feed your dog as much of a higher-priced food as you would a lower-priced food. When you compare foods, don’t just look at the per-pound price. Do the math to figure a per-feeding price: figure out how many feedings a particular brand will provide for your dog, then divide that into the cost.
3. A food that one dog won’t tolerate well can be ideal for another dog.
Runny stools, gas, vomiting, and other maladies may occur with a particular type of food that other dog owners rave about. It’s difficult to tell what’s going to happen with your dog when you put him or her on a new diet, so be sure to mix the new food in with the current food on a one-to-three ratio (one part new to three parts current), increasing it slowly week by week, to make it easier to introduce the new food. And don’t buy a super-large bag at first, even though those are more economical, because if your dog has a bad reaction to it, you’ll be stuck with it all.

https://www.fieldandstream.com/reasons-you-should-carry-portable-jump-starter/
Portable jump starters can be saviors in a one-pound package. These lithium-battery powered devices store enough power to start your vehicle if your battery drains, or if it can’t hold a strong enough charge anymore. There’s no need to jockey another vehicle nearby so you can extend jumper cables from one vehicle to the other. You simply attach the alligator clips to your vehicle’s battery terminal clamps, turn it on, and start your car. Such self-sufficiency is the main reason people purchase portable jump starters—but there are more.
1. As a power source in the event of a grid failure.
If you’ve experienced a power outage for a couple of days, you realize how much you rely on your cell phone and computer or tablet. You can charge those devices in your vehicle, but that takes gasoline—which may not be available. And if your vehicle battery dies, you’re out of options.
2. As escape insurance in remote or wilderness areas.
If you’ve ever left your vehicle at the side of a dirt road to hunt, fish, hike, or camp for a week, you’ve probably crossed your fingers upon returning, hoping the vehicle will start. If it doesn’t—and if your cell phone’s battery is drained, which may well be the case, or if you’re far from cell service, and there are no other vehicles around from which you could get a jump—the only option is to walk to help, and that may take a very long time. Then there’s the expense of getting roadside assistance all the way back to your vehicle. A portable charger will save you that cost, along with time, effort, discomfort, and possibly worse.
3. If you need power for your devices anywhere there’s not an outlet.
Beach, boat, deer camp—portable car chargers are incredibly convenient for staying literally plugged in. You may have a vehicle with you, but it’s annoying to have to start it up and run it, and wasteful. Not only will you be able to keep your phone charged, you’ll be able to keep your kids’ devices running the entire time. And that last advantage is priceless.

https://www.fieldandstream.com/things-to-look-for-your-next-truck-battery/
Choosing the correct battery for your truck is all about expectations, like choosing the right jacket to wear on a particular day. If the weather is cool and you’ll be doing something active outside, such as throwing a ball around, you won’t need a very warm jacket because you’ll be generating body heat. But if you’re going to the stadium instead to watch a ball game, you’ll need a heavier jacket, because you won’t be generating as much body heat just sitting in the stands.
Likewise, the best battery for your truck depends on the temperature where you live, as well as whether you’ll be driving the truck often or letting it sit for long periods. Here’s a guide:
If you live in a cold climate, choose a battery that has a high cold cranking amp (CCA) rating, not just a high cranking amp (CA) rating. A battery’s CCA rating is determined at 0 degrees, while the CA rating is determined at 32 degrees. Very cold temperatures thicken oil and other lubricants, making the engine harder to turn over, which makes the CCA rating crucial.
If the vehicle will be sitting for long periods between uses, choose a battery that has a high reserve capacity. Reserve capacity refers to how long a battery can hold enough power to start an engine as the battery slowly discharges over time. Modern vehicles have a lot of small computers that draw power when the vehicle is not running, so if your truck will be parked for long periods, get a battery with a high reserve capacity. It won’t lose power as fast as one with a lower capacity, and you can count on it to start the truck when you get back in it.
If you live in a region with a moderate climate and drive the truck fairly often, choose a balance between good CCA and good reserve capacity. Because running the vehicle allows the alternator to recharge the battery, you don’t need a high reserve capacity if you drive the vehicle daily, and you don’t need a high CCA to turn over the engine when it’s not cold out. But winters happen, as do unanticipated trips, so don’t skimp.
