Of Elk and Family

My brother, Mike, and I went on our first DIY archery elk hunt in Colorado in September of 2009. It was an amazing experience and one that ignited a desire to continue to hunt elk in the mountains. Since that hunt, life happened, and things got busy. Both of us started families, bought houses and had career changes or advancements. We tried to plan a hunt nearly every year since our first hunt, but it just didn’t work out for one of us. Finally, after building preference points for seven years, the stars aligned, as we both were able to commit to applying for a fall hunt, and better yet, we even drew the tag. We were going elk hunting in Wyoming!

We hunted hard, and one evening, about an hour before sunset, a nice bull stepped into a meadow we were waiting on the edge of. My brother, unbeknownst to me, had got his rangefinder out earlier and whispered to me that the bull was at 48 yards. I pictured the bone structure of the front shoulder and aimed just behind, knowing that I needed to tuck the arrow as close to the bone as possible.

My nervousness and anxiety seemed to disappear, and I felt as if everything was in slow motion. I remember squeezing the trigger and watching the arrow fly inch by inch until it impacted the bull exactly where it needed to. It was a surreal moment. The bull turned, and I could see the arrow sticking out the other side. He ran about 30 yards to the edge of the meadow and fell down. He got up, then staggered back and forth before finally falling for the last time.

At that point, I lost it. I began to shake uncontrollably as my brother shouted over and over again, “You got him!” I looked over at Mike, and he was shaking just as bad. It was a team effort, and it felt as if we shot that bull together. I think we were both a bit in shock, but we celebrated and exchanged high fives. We walked over to where the bull had gone down, and I was speechless. I grabbed the antlers, and the magnitude of what we had just accomplished set in. I was all smiles despite knowing that dark was setting in and we had a lot of work ahead of us. One thing is for certain: This hunt gave us the incentive to try and plan our next hunt sooner rather than later.

It was a foggy Saturday morning, September 9th, 2017. Walking in the dark, I was hoping to get to my spot ahead of where the deer tend to cross on my favorite ridge. I found about six nice deer as the sun came up that were on the wrong side of the fence. I watched them for a while and decided to keep moving. About 800 yards up the trail I spotted another group of bucks. I hit the ground and started crawling. It took me about 30 minutes to gain 100 yards on them. They were slowly feeding away from me, with the wind headed my way.

They were dispersed amongst the shadows of the pine trees which made it hard to make them out. The big buck I’d been searching for was in the lead and I finally had a shot. I had to calm myself down and focus on waiting for the right time. I ranged him at 45 yards. I sat up and drew as he stepped out from behind a large tree. I released and watched my arrow fly perfectly. Just before my arrow got to him, it took a dramatic turn. I didn’t see the branch right in front of his body. I couldn’t believe it. The arrow deflected and hit below him. I couldn’t believe my eyes. The bucks ran off and I walked over to grab my arrow. I was completely disappointed in myself. All of the preparation and practice, and I blew the shot.

The arrow didn’t spook them too badly. Luckily, they hadn’t seen or smelled me. I decided to sneak down the valley and see if I could find them again. No more than 30 steps and I froze. There he was, staring me down at 51 yards. I’d practiced at 70 yards all summer and I knew I could make this shot. I drew and released. Impact! I watched my arrow bury just above the center of his chest, exactly where I needed to hit. Immediately he charged straight at me. My first thought was that he was coming to take revenge on me! I panicked and tried to nock an arrow. He ran by me at no less than five yards as I fumbled another arrow onto my bow. He ran another 20 yards and hit the dirt. I heard his final sigh and he breathed his last breath. I threw hands up with my bow in hand. I couldn’t believe that was able to take such a beautiful animal.

My good friend Chris was right behind me on the ridge and saw my excitement. We walked over to the deer together. He didn’t know which buck I had shot. When we got to him, Chris looked at me and said, “Oh wow, that’s him! You got him!” We admired him for a couple minutes, and I said my thank you’s. This hunt will be ingrained in my mind forever.

About the Author: I’ve grown up hunting my entire life. My dad is an avid outdoorsman that has taken me hunting since I was a little kid. Almost all of my hunting has been in Colorado and southern Wyoming.

The best deer taxidermy poses. So many choices. But all of them right ones. Killing a big mature buck is hard. There isn’t anything easy about it. So when it all finally comes together, you want to cherish and remember that memory. You want to encapsulate it. And I like to do that by having my deer mounted. I visited Sam Coffey of Custom Wildlife Mounts and got the 411 on the different mount options available to deer hunters.

Have you always wanted to get your buck mounted, but haven’t? Still got that cape in the freezer waiting for the right time to take it to the taxidermist? Got a set of horns laying around from a buck you killed when you were a kid, but didn’t have it mounted then because you couldn’t afford it? Wait no longer. Pick a pose from this photo gallery and get that deer to the taxidermist.

But before you do, let’s clarify the difference between a pose and a variation. A pose is the position of the neck. Variations are small, detail-oriented options you can have with each pose.

Pose: Full-Sneak

The full-sneak is a very popular pose. A lot of people like it. It’s great for those low-hanging ceilings that are 8 feet or less. Pair it with the open-mouth or fleming-nose variation and it looks even better.

Pose: Semi-Sneak

The famous semi-sneak. It’s likely the most popular mount pose there is. As a matter of fact, four of my five biggest bucks are mounted in this pose. I love it. It’s great getting a semi-sneak with a tilted head. Get it as a right- or left-turn mount depending on which side of the television you want it to go on.

Pose: Full-Upright

I’m not as fond of this pose as some of the others. But a lot of people like. It makes it look like the deer is alert and paying attention to something. It’s a cool pose, for sure.

Pose: Semi-Upright

This is similar to the full-upright, but the head is not quite as high. I really like this position for a wall pedestal with a hard left or right turn. Just looks really good.

Pose: Full-Pedestal

Got a corner of the room with nothing in it? Get a full-pedestal mount. They’re a little more expensive, but they look good and change things up from some of the more traditional mount poses.

Pose: Wall-Pedestal

I think of the wall-pedestal as that pose you get once you have several shoulder mounts on the wall. I don’t personally have one of these. But if I ever kill a 170-inch deer or better, this’ll be the pose.

Variation: Head Down, Raised, Left, Or Right

One variation is the head. You can have it tilted down, raised up, or turned left or right. The head position needs to be decided based on where the mount will hang in your home. Going on the right side of the television? Get a right-hand turn. Going on the left side? Get a left-hand turn. And remember, a head tilted downward makes the antlers look larger. Tilting it up does the opposite.

Variation: Ears

The ears help tell the story. For a sneak pose, I think one ear forward and one back looks great. For an upright pose, I like both ears forward. Just my preference, though. Get whatever makes you happy.

Variation: Open-Mouth

You have to admit an open-mouth mount is pretty cool. This is another one of those things that will cost a little extra money. That’s something to consider when deciding what your mount should look like.

Variation: Fleming-Nose

Ol’ boy knows she’s in estrus. Pretty cool sight in the wild. Pretty cool pose variation for the mount in the living room. Again, it’s a little pricier. But it’s worth the money if it’s what you truly want.
